Spoilers ahead!

The Magnificent Seven is a 2016 production from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Columbia Pictures. The movie is directed by Antoine Fuqua, with the script written by Nic Pizzolatto and Richard Wenk, based on the 1960 version of the same name. The movie stars Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onofrio, Lee Byung-hun, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo and Martin Sensmeier as the seven referred to in the title. Alongside them we see Haley Bennett and Peter Sarsgaard star as important characters. The movie scores 6.9/10 on IMDb and received a 54 Metascore.

The Story

As we go back to Western times, a town is under the control of a businessman using his wealth to keep the people under his rule. And the story creates itself here, the town needs to be freed from its oppressor. Chosen for the nearly impossible job is a bounty hunter named Chisolm as the story starts surrounding more about him than the town they are saving.

Along the road to Rose Creek, he gathers his team, some old acquaintances as well as some new friends. This sets up a rather slow, but quite nice pacing, combining action with some more personal and emotional moments. I do have to admit that almost every single one of the seven signs on a little too quick for a quest likely resulting in their demise. Apart from that I quite like the story, especially with the ending creating a full circle for our main protagonist.

The Characters

Let’s give my opinion on every one of the seven (from last credited to first):

Red Harvest: Scary introduction with the heart-eating part but other than that seems like a scary guy good at killing people with more primitive tools, whilst having a funny side. 8/10

Vasquez: Don’t care for him, lacks real character-building or personality in this film. His redeeming factor is his interactions with Faraday. 3/10

Billy Rocks: Holy moly this guy is freaking cool. Good with guns and knives, is extremely agile and has some of the most amazing kills in the whole movie. Nice to see him care for and protect Goodnight. His duel introducing him to the viewer was truly an amazing setup. 10/10

Jack Horne: I like his accent and his use of melee weaponry when possible. Other than that a bit of a weird character with some bad interactions with other characters. 5/10

Goodnight Robicheaux: This guy has the most amazing name I’ve ever seen. His sniper skills are insane, a shame we didn’t get to see it that much. Also nice character-building with the PTSD but he lost that between riding away and back from Rose Creek. 7/10

Josh Faraday: I am a Chris Pratt fan but this role was not his best. He had some good moments, especially earlier in the movie, while he was on his own. In the team, his character didn’t work that well and fell short of my expectations. 6/10

Lincoln Chisolm: Amazing Denzel performance as the lead of this movie. His character was not much more than just the leader of the group for a while but the ending made this character 10x better. His introduction comes in second after Billy. 7/10

The Production

Probably the part of the movie I liked the most. The western scenery was amazing with its houses, landscapes and clothing. The movie is also very action-packed but every fight scene still felt unique, with its moves and shots. During the start of the movie, the introduction of Chisolm was also a prime example of great cinematography, keeping his face out of frame until the moment was just right.
